The United States Colored Troops (USCT) were regiments of the United States Army during the American Civil War that were composed of African-American ("colored") soldiers. First recruited in 1863, by the end of the Civil War, the men of the 175 regiments of the USCT constituted approximately one-tenth of the Union Army.

NY 26th USCT

Over 4,000 free Blacks served in the only three USCT regiments that came our of New York, The 20th, the 26th, and the 31st. There training bases were Rikers Island, and Hart Island ( also known as Potter's Field). The NY USCT drew enlistees from near and far, including countries outside of the United States, such as Haiti, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Cuba Trinidad, Puerto Rico, Virgin Island, Barbados, and Native Americans from Long Island.

NY Regiment of United Colored Troops' Civil War and Baseball

"base ball" was regularly played on Saturdays in 1823 on the outskirts of New York City in an area that today is Greenwich Village.

The first team to play baseball under modern rules were the New York Knickerbockers. The club was founded on September 23, 1845, as a social club for the upper middle classes of New York City, and was strictly amateur until it disbanded.

In 1857, sixteen New York area clubs, including the Knickerbockers, formed the National Association of Base Ball Players (NABBP). The NABBP was the first organization to govern the sport and to establish a championship. Aided by the Civil War, membership grew to almost 100 clubs by 1865 and to over 400 by 1867

Civil war, soldiers from different parts of the United States played baseball together, leading to a more unified national version of the sport.

At the end of the Civil War, Weeksville, in Brooklyn, NY ( Visit Weeksville Heritage Center) was a bustling black community, spread out over nearly one hundred present-day blocks. It was self-sustaining, with churches, schools, including Colored School No. 2,  homes for orphans and the elderly, farms, and businesses. Some sources put it as the second-largest free-black community in the country. It even had its own baseball team, which beat the Colored Union Club of Hoboken 11-0 in 1860, in the first known game between black teams.

  1. I am having an event in November on Long Island. Would it be possible for me to have reenactors from the 26th USCT regiment present at the event and what is the process for this request?

    thank you.
